What If Thanksgiving Looked Different This Year?

For many of us, Thanksgiving follows a familiar rhythm. The grocery lists get longer, the kitchen gets busier, and before you know it, the holiday has come and gone in a blur of meal planning, cooking, and cleaning. 

But more travelers are beginning to ask a different question: 

What if Thanksgiving became the vacation instead of the occasion to host one? 

It’s a trend that’s gaining momentum, especially among couples, empty nesters, and multigenerational families looking to spend the holiday making memories rather than managing a long to-do list. 

Imagine waking up on Thanksgiving morning to the sound of waves instead of an alarm clock. Instead of checking on the turkey every hour, you’re enjoying breakfast overlooking the Caribbean before spending the afternoon on the beach. 

Or perhaps your ideal Thanksgiving looks completely different. 

Maybe you’re wandering through a centuries-old village in Europe or stopping into a local café before visiting a museum. Perhaps you’re sailing a river through Germany or France, where each day brings a new town to explore and Thanksgiving dinner is served in an elegant dining room overlooking the water. 

For others, it’s a luxury ocean cruise where every detail has already been arranged. There are no grocery runs, no dishes waiting in the sink, and no pressure to host. Instead, your biggest decision might be whether to spend the afternoon at the spa, by the pool, or exploring a new port of call before gathering for an exceptional holiday meal. 

Travel doesn’t replace Thanksgiving traditions; it simply creates new ones. 

I’ve found that many travelers aren’t looking to escape the holiday itself. They’re looking to escape the stress that often comes with it. Without the responsibility of cooking, cleaning, decorating, or coordinating every detail, there’s more time to enjoy meaningful conversations, celebrate with family, and experience a destination together. 

Thanksgiving also offers a wonderful opportunity for multigenerational travel. Grandparents, parents, and grandchildren can explore together during a time when many schools and workplaces are already closed. Whether it’s a guided journey through Italy, a luxury resort in Mexico, or a cruise where every generation can enjoy the vacation in their own way, the holiday becomes about shared experiences instead of shared responsibilities. 

Of course, the best Thanksgiving trips rarely come together at the last minute. 

Holiday travel is one of the busiest times of the year, and premium flights, suites, guided tours, and sought-after resorts often fill months in advance. Planning in late summer gives you the best opportunity to secure the accommodations, itineraries, and experiences that fit the way you want to travel; not simply what’s still available. 

One of the things I enjoy most about helping clients plan holiday travel is finding the experience that feels right for them. For some, that’s a quiet beachfront escape. For others, it’s discovering a new culture, enjoying incredible cuisine, or finally taking the European journey they’ve talked about for years. 

There will always be a place for celebrating Thanksgiving at home.
